Your comment makes me think of this book
Where Robert Wright argues that the jumping to the defense of billionaires can be explained by our search for social status. Elon has so much credit than being even very remotely associated to him increases (or rather gives us the impression) our own status.
This thought of his was very interesting to me. In general, I highly recommend the book.
