They don't need to do that to pay less, they can just change the commission they take. Medium never disclosed the amount as far as I know (contrary to Substack for example). I would love to know that amount!!

Also who pays $5 not to read anything? I don't believe that.

Some people must be earning more. I guess the boosted stories earn much more with the boost bonus on top.

And it seems reciprocal writers are also getting more because of the engagement points / follower bonus, but that's just based on a few stories I saw.
