Medium explains somewhere how it works. It's not so much your claps compared to mine. It's more my one clap on Writer A's article compared to the 50 I gave someone else. The Algo will think the 50 clap story was more interesting to me and will show me more of these than of the one clap story.

I guess it might also use this signal to judge if a story is worth pushing further.
