I'm not sure, but I think readers read Medium, not writers. So the algo works and shows them what they want to read, which isn't necessarily by you, or rather isn't statistically.

Also, I suspect that a piece getting staff picked means a lot of people will get to read something out of their reading comfort zone. It's a one shot stretch that doesn't repeat itself.
