Claps used to be the basis for payment, but it’s not anymore.

Now it’s just feel good for writers. There’s a slight “marketing” potential in the sense that someone might be less likely to read an article with 2 claps thant with 100.

On a side note, you can keep the button press and clap 50 times (as opposed to clicking 50 times)

Another commenter mentioned a five stars system as you did. I agree it would make much more sense. As you said who can make the difference between 32 and 35 claps?!
